Programs are held monthly from March to May and September to November.

An annual business meeting is held each June. The Board of Directors meets to conduct the Society’s day-to-day business from December to February.

No meetings are held from July to August, unless scheduled by necessity.

Upcoming Programs

The Chicopee Historical Society presents Unveiling the Inshaw Rifle: Lecture and Ceremony. Wednesday, May 20 from 6:30 to 8 P.M. at the Chicopee Public Library. What can a rifle tell us about Chicopee 1900 years ago? Quite a bit! Custom made as an intricate display model, one of the best-preserved pre-Civil War rifles will be displayed for the first time in 23 years. Join us as we unveil the display case.
The Chicopee Historical Society 40th annual meeting and elections. Wednesday, June 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chicopee Public Library. Each June, the Society meets to elect its board and discuss projects. This is a great event for longtime members and curious non-members alike to catch up with the Society's work! Join us as we mark 40 years since our first meeting.
The Chicopee Historical Society presents the life of Maude Tait on Wednesday, June 17, 6:30 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Chicopee Public Library. Before there was Springfield Plaza, there was Springfield Airport, the home base of the Bay State's fastest air racer, Maude Tait. Join Sue Bousquet of the Wood Museum of Springfield History to learn how Tait became the valley's first woman to fly solo and one of the era's "modern women."

Hessians in the American Revolution

What drove Hessian soldiers to fight patriots in Western Massachusetts? Why did some settle here after the war had ended? Join “living history” interpreter Dennis Picard to learn about an often misunderstood chapter in the American Revolution.

Chicopee, Then & Now – March 18, 2025

Old photos reveal how much our world has changed. Whether it’s a simple change in color or a paved paradise, every photo has a story. Join historian and author Derek Strahan as he compares photos of Chicopee from the 1890s-1920s with
his attempts retake these photos today!

Art in the Graveyard – April 16, 2025

Public art is found on town commons across New England, but some of our earliest public art is in burial grounds, from longstanding memorials to exhibitions for the dead. Join preservationist Ta Mara Conde as she shares the artwork of early gravestones and asks how their meanings have changed over time.

History of the Dwight Manufacturing Company – May 21, 2025

The Dwight mills tell a tale of land, labor and industry spanning the 1830s through World War II. Hear it from Joe Pasternak and Chet Kobierski as they unveil never-before-published photos from the Sagalyn family, after the mills were sold to Industrial Building Corp. in the 1930s.

The 1913 Library Conversion Project – September 17, 2025

Heara from Chicopee’s Planning Director, Lee Pouliot, on the Community Hub at Market Square, the city’s new community space. Originally built in 1913 as the city’s first dedicated library building, the vacant was vacant from 2004 to 2025. Join us to learn about this case study in adaptive reuse and the value of this historic space.

Dr. Fletcher’s Book of the Dead – October 15, 2025

What was the state of public health in Chicopee 100 years ago? Join CHS Vice President and local author Jacqueline T. Lynch as she shares a medical examiner’s record book spanning 1918 to 1940. The record book was kept by Samuel Fletcher (1867-1943), a former city physician and mayor of Chicopee.

History of the Fisk Rubber Company, 1898-1945 – November 19, 2025

You may know it as U.S. Rubber or Uniroyal, but we all called it by its original name, “The Fisk,” or just “Fisk.” Join CHS docents Joe Pasternak and Chet Kobierski as they retell the history of the city’s once-largest company and a community anchor in Chicopee Falls.
